Are we healthier in the EU?

Our membership of the EU ensures that Scots in Europe are guaranteed health care at the point of need, and that we are at the forefront of industry leading research.

EU membership gives Scots access to the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) which allows them to access state healthcare on the same basis as residents of the country they are visiting. As one of the first key examples of European integration, this scheme continues to make access to healthcare throughout the EU easy and effective.

We can achieve great advances in medicine and healthcare by working together with our EU partners. For example, EU legislation enables states to cooperate in preventing the spread of illness and disease including working together on joint actions to address cancer and HIV/AIDs, coordination on health threats including communicable diseases and advancing major campaigns against drug use.
