What is the SNP doing to encourage people to use public transport?
The SNP Government is investing over £1 billion annually in public transport and other sustainable transport options to encourage people out of their car. We have also committed to a £5 billion programme of investment in Scotland’s railways over 5 years to 2019, almost double that planned by UK Ministers on a per capita basis – including the completion of the electrification of the Edinburgh-Glasgow rail line.
The SNP will back local bus services by continuing to provide financial support for services, as well as incentives for the take up of greener vehicles. We will also bring forward a Transport Bill to improve bus services.
Our national smart card plans are being rolled out across ScotRail, with systems ensuring that the same cards can be used on ScotRail and the Glasgow Subway. And we are working with bus and ferry companies to ensure that the Saltire national concessionary travel cards are usable across the entire transport network.
