Stewart was elected as MSP for Banff and Buchan at a by-election in 2001. Since being elected, he has campaigned to save Peterhead Prison, establish a new hospital in Banff and a 3-shift ambulance station in Fraserburgh.
His constituency priorities have been the future of the fishing industry, ensuring adequate out-of-hours medical service for his constituents, and gaining a re-build for Peterhead Prison.
Married, he lives with Sandra in Banffshire. Prior to being elected, he worked in technology with Bank of Scotland for 30 years, retiring as Director of Technology Innovation.
He has also lectured in the business school at Heriot-Watt University and, in the 1960s, worked in a psychiatric hospital.
He is a graduate of Aberdeen University with a modest degree in mathematics. His leisure interests include photography, reading and writing and private flying.
